“She recalled the time, when her husband was still young and all he wanted was to show her parents that, although a late teenager at the time and a little insecure and carefree, he would soon be in a position to look after their daughter. The girl herself was a hard nut to crack and no suitors ever measured up. Her parents had already set up twenty-three o-miai, always with the same outcome: she would find some flaw in them and the first date would be the last. They realized their daughter must be a case of “kurisumasu keki”*and decided not to waste any more time on her. Yet she seemed to have developed a liking for this gawky boy, whom she had at first ruled out. Her parents clearly felt this was their last chance but, truth be told, they didn’t take it that seriously. Then, after the second or third date, the boy vanished. ‘You’ll see, father,’ said Emiko-san in a prophetic tone, ‘he’ll be back. Just when we least expect him.’ ‘Like death itself!’ her father replied, receiving a kick from his wife under the kotatsu.”
